![]() ![]() If it's not at least an SSD, you're best off just buying a couple cheap $10 SD card readers. ![]() So basically what it comes down to initially is what drive you're putting the footage on to. But judging by your question, i think that's something you would have mentioned. The exception is a RAID array, which gives you faster (typically Read) speeds. A lot of the time, people use SSDs for initial transfer and editing, and then move to larger/slower/cheaper HDDs for storage. If you're shooting very frequently, then something like an SSD might fill up fast. If you have a drive that is 90% full, it's normally going to be slower than one that is almost empty. Keep in mind that many drives slow down pretty significantly when they fill up. SSD could be 2-3x that, and above that is the M.2 PCI-e SSD's (i have one and i think I get something like 1GB/s, but i think that's read speed). Are you transferring the footage to a standard Hard drive? If so, then you'll only really get maybe like around 125MB/s. The files are only going to be put on your computer as fast as the system drive is able to write them. The downside is that usually USB 3.0 readers are dirt cheap, while Thunderbolt ones can get price-ier.Īnother point to consider is the write speed of the computer drive. ![]() But in the real world, it's unlikely you'll hit that. Theoretically, USB3 can get speeds up to about 640MB/s. These days, don't use anything less than USB 3.0. The second aspect is the transfer rate of the cable or interface. I can run a benchmark when i get the chance, but i'd guess that it might be closer to 200MB/s. Those fast Sandisk ones look like they say up to 300MB/s, but real world use it's unlikely you'd get that. It sounds like you're aiming for very fast ones, which is good. ![]() Well first off, you're typically going to be limited by the read speed of the cards. You have to consider the read and write speed of all the hardware that the data is coming in contact with. u/shickey maintains a videography-themed weekly challenge subreddit, so if you're looking for something to shoot head on over to /r/DoCreativeĬamera, NLE, year started, general location
